Working with a custom supplement manufacturer
What to include in your project brief
A supplement manufacturing quote is only as useful as the product details behind it. Two quotes for “a magnesium capsule” may cover different ingredient forms, serving sizes, bottle counts, testing requirements, and order quantities. Comparing the unit prices alone can lead a brand to budget for a product it never intended to launch.
Before contacting a custom supplement manufacturer, put together a short project brief. You do not need a finished formula to start the conversation. You do need to explain what you want to sell, which decisions are already fixed, and where you need help.
This guide covers projects in hard capsules, tablets, and powders, with a practical brief you can use to request a quote.
Decide whether you need an existing formula or custom development
Start by describing the product you need, rather than choosing a service name alone. Manufacturers use terms such as private label, white label, and custom manufacturing differently. Ask what each option includes.
For private label supplements, establish whether the proposed formula already exists, whether changes are possible, and whether other brands can buy the same formula. An existing formula may reduce development work, but its serving size and packaging still need to fit your product plan.
Custom supplement formulation starts with more product decisions. You may need a new ingredient combination, a specific amount per serving, or a powder flavor developed for your audience. Identify which requirements are essential and which can change after a feasibility review.
If you already have a formula, provide ingredient forms and amounts, not just a front-label ingredient list. If you have only a concept, explain the intended customer, product category, preferred format, and target serving experience.
Ekang Nutra’s private label supplement manufacturing service supports discussions about existing formulas and custom projects.
Choose a format the formula can support
A format decision affects serving size, processing, packaging, and cost. Ask your supplement contract manufacturer to review the formula and format together before you finalize the label.
Hard capsules
Include in your brief
Ingredients and amounts per serving, preferred shell requirements, capsules per serving, bottle count
Can the blend fit within the intended capsule count? How do powder density and flow affect filling?
Tablets
Include in your brief
Ingredients and amounts per serving, tablets per serving, preferred size, bottle count
Can the blend be compressed into a practical tablet? What excipients or process adjustments may be needed?
Powders
Include in your brief
Grams per serving, flavor preferences, mixing instructions, servings per pack
What taste, dispersibility, fill-weight, and packaging requirements need review?
Hard capsules: confirm the serving before the bottle count
A two-piece hard capsule has limited fill space. Ingredient weight alone does not establish whether a formula will fit; the blend’s density and manufacturing behavior also matter. A request for one capsule per serving may need revision once the formula is evaluated.
State any shell preferences at the start. Ask whether the proposed shell and blend are suitable for the product and its storage conditions. Then confirm the number of capsules per serving and per bottle.
For a closer look at filling and shell-related questions, read our guide to capsule supplement manufacturing issues.
Tablets: review manufacturability and customer use together
Tablet size, ingredient loading, and compression requirements need to work together. A larger amount per serving can mean a larger tablet or multiple tablets. The formula may also need excipients that support processing and finished-tablet performance.
When comparing private label tablet manufacturers, ask for the proposed serving size and full ingredient information before approving artwork. If tablet dimensions or coating preferences matter to your brand, include them in the brief rather than raising them after sampling.
Powders: define what happens when the customer uses the product
A powder supplement manufacturer needs more than a list of active ingredients. Specify grams per serving, the intended amount of water or other mixing medium, flavor preferences, sweetener restrictions, and packaging.
Describe the mixing experience you want. “Easy to mix” is less useful than a request for a powder stirred into a defined volume of cold water. Ingredient choices can limit what is achievable, so use samples to review taste and mixing behavior before approving the product.
See our powder supplement manufacturing service for available project and packaging options.
Give quantities in finished saleable units
“A small first order” is not a quantity specification. State the number of bottles, tubs, or other finished packs you want, together with the contents of each unit.
For example, 2,000 bottles containing 60 hard capsules each describes a requirement for 120,000 capsules. If the serving is two capsules, each bottle contains 30 servings. These are illustrative planning numbers, not an Ekang minimum order quantity.
For powders, specify net weight and servings per pack. For tablets, specify tablets per bottle and tablets per serving. If you want quotes at several quantities, keep the formula, serving size, and packaging consistent so the comparison is meaningful.
Ask which minimum applies to the proposed project: a production batch, an ingredient purchase, or a packaging order. A lower finished-product quantity may still leave development or material costs to cover.
Separate manufacturing cost from the rest of the quote
Supplement manufacturing cost depends on the product specification and the scope of work. Ask for a written breakdown that identifies recurring product costs and any separate charges.
Check whether the quote includes formulation work, samples, ingredients, production, packaging components, filling, labels, agreed testing, and delivery. Clarify which items you will supply and which the manufacturer will arrange.
Record the quotation’s assumptions. If a price is based on a particular ingredient source, bottle, or testing scope, a later change may affect it. Comparing quotes becomes easier when every supplier is pricing the same product and service scope.
Have a concept but no finished formula? Send Ekang Nutra your project brief with the preferred format, quantity, packaging, and launch target. Identify the decisions you need help making so the first discussion can address feasibility and the information needed for a quote.
Agree on specifications, documentation, and approvals
Quality requirements belong in the project discussion. Ask how the proposed product’s specifications will be established, which testing or examinations apply, what documentation you will receive, and who authorizes release.
The FDA’s overview of dietary supplement current good manufacturing practices explains that the requirements address product identity, purity, strength, composition, and contamination controls. The appropriate checks depend on the product and production controls; agree on the scope rather than relying on a general promise of “quality testing.”
Also identify who approves the formula, sample, label text, and packaging artwork. Before committing to a supplement manufacturing partner, use our manufacturer due diligence checklist to review the facility and supporting documentation.
Work backward from the launch date
Distinguish the date you want production completed from the date you need inventory delivered. A project may need time for formula review, samples, ingredient sourcing, packaging, production, testing, and release.
Ask what must be approved before the production schedule can be confirmed. If artwork or samples are still pending, describe the launch date as a target. For an existing product transfer, provide the current specification and packaging details so the manufacturer can review what needs to change.
What to send with your inquiry
A clear inquiry gives the manufacturer enough detail to review your project. Use the points below when preparing your message. If something is undecided, write “needs development.”

Frequently asked questions
Can I contact a custom supplement manufacturer without a formula?
Yes. Send a clear product concept, intended customer, preferred format, quantity, and packaging preferences. Explain which decisions need development. The manufacturer can then identify the information and feasibility work needed before quoting production.
Does a smaller order always mean a lower total project cost?
A smaller order can reduce the number of finished units purchased, but development, setup, material purchases, and packaging requirements may still affect the total. Request a quote for the complete project and distinguish one-time charges from recurring costs.
Can the same formula be made as hard capsules, tablets, and powder?
Each format needs its own review. Capsule fill space, tablet compression, and powder taste and mixing requirements can require changes to the formulation or serving size. Confirm feasibility before treating the formats as interchangeable.
What should I send Ekang Nutra for a quote?
